Teachers Network
How-To: Incorporate New Media into Your Classroom Using a Discussion Forum on Nicenet.org
Peggy Maslow

As I have mentioned in many of my columns previously, www.Nicenet.org is a free discussion forum which can be used by all educators. A discussion forum is a public classroom forum for creating, discussing and reflecting on ideas. Characteristics are: * An asynchronous experience (Writing can be posted by students at any time before the appointed date.) * A place where assignments can be posted by the teacher and then students post their writing * A place to post pre-selected links * A place where a teacher can read student work samples and any member of the class can also read other students' writing. * A place where any member of the class, teacher or students, can reply to a posted piece of writing. Students respond to various topics under what is called "conferencing," usually posted in advance by the teacher. Depending on the purpose of the writing, it may be revised or not. The writing can be informal and shared with others in the class. Or it can be a final draft posted for assessment by other students and/or the teacher. It is expected that students will be respectful of the writing and opinions of others and that they will respond accordingly.

Kerpoof

Fron Steve Dembo - Digital Passports

Digital Passports » Kerpoof! Eat your heart out Kid Pix
Kerpoof! Eat your heart out Kid Pix

As a former kindergarten teacher, it sometimes seemed like my life revolved around KidPix. And while it had a bazillion features packed into it, when you got right down to it we spent 90% of our time creating pictures and slide shows.

While there had been a few open source programs similar to Kid Pix (anyone remember Tux?), they don’t hold a candle to one of my new fave’s for lower elementary/early childhood, Kerpoof! You can make books, pictures or stories.

Just choose a background, and start dragging the clip art onto the page. Yes, you can resize, rotate, and move them all. What’s interesting is that they incorporate the concept of scale! Put a penguin on the picture. If you move him towards the back (farther away) he gets smaller. Bring him into the foreground (closer to you) he gets bigger! You can always resize them manually, but it does a pretty good job on its own. That’s not the only dynamic piece. In the arctic background, all the chunks of ice are live. You can move or delete them to your hearts content. Same thing with other backgrounds. When you drag a sun into your picture, it figures out automatically if it should be in front of the mountains or behind them. If the sun is low in the sky, you’ll get a beautiful sunset on your picture. Drag the sun up to the top and it’ll turn the sky to noontime! Drop the sun way down low and the picture turns to night with the sun invisible. VERY cool.

And what’s the cost of Kerpoof? Oh yeah… Free. They even have a teacher section with a few ideas for using it in the classroom. Only thing two criticisms from me. 1) I’d love to see some drawing tools in there so kids can add their own free hand stuff. And 2) They need code to embed the resulting projects into web pages and email them to friends. I had to do screenshots instead. Well worth checking out!

Thinkfinity - an elevator speech to describe it.

What is Thinkfinity? Thinkfinity is a collaboration and sharing web portal, which allows teachers and students to zero in with laser like precision onto educational resources that meet their needs. Instead of using a search engine, like Google, which may give you millions of hits to willow and wade through when searching for content related to a standard, Thinkfinity almost instantly gives you teacher and peer reviewed web sites and documents which are aligned to state and national standards.

The web resources include lesson plans, printable documents, multimedia, as well as interactive computer simulations for the majority of curricular disciplines. From mathematics, dance, geography and even literacy. It is a way to save time searching the plethora of items on the web and is a well organized library of curriculum - and it is free. The site partners with National Education partners, like NCTM, NCTE and more. So find an internet connection and enhance as well as differentiate your instruction using Thinkfinity.

It's not all what we hear - Digital Natives may need us more than we think

Digital Nativism
Digital Nativism Digital Delusions and Digital Deprivation By Jamie McKenzie About author Being born into a culture saturated with things digital is not a complete blessing despite the eager claims of digital drum majors and pied pipers. Neither is such immersion an automatic state of grace. Those leading the digital surge are quick to exile older folks to a dust bin of irrelevancy simply because they were born before the iPod. Their point of view is harsh and ill informed. Their stance is unsubstantiated

eSchool News online - Parents, kids don't see need for math, science skills

I worry when reports like this come out - not the report exists, but that it reinforces my concerns as to why Science and Mathematics instruction is so hard.
By Meris Stansbury, Assistant Editor, eSchool News A new report commissioned as part of an initiative to improve Math, Science and Technology (MST) education throughout the Kansas City area suggests that on the whole, parents, students, and local communities nationwide are complacent about or even resisting efforts to strengthen MST education, failing to realize the opportunities that knowledge of such subjects can bring in the 21st century. September 21, 2007—With lawmakers and school leaders alike stressing the importance of math, science, and technology (MST) education in preparing students for 21st-century jobs and careers, one might assume that parents and students would agree these subjects are crucial to their future success. But a new report challenges this assumption. According to the report, titled "Important, But Not for Me: Parents and Students in Kansas and Missouri Talk About Math, Science, and Technology Education," parents and students say they understand the importance of MST skills in general--but they don't see these as important for themselves. The report is based on a survey of about 2,600 parents and students in grades six through twelve from Kansas and Missouri public schools. It comes from Public Agenda, a nonprofit organization .....
eSchool News online - Parents, kids don't see need for math, science skills I recall once meeting with a parent who told me it (their childs difficulty) was genetic - "in their genes".  Would they tell an English teacher the same thing?  "I'm sorry, but I don't expect my child to know how to read, I found it difficult" - time to keep on trying.

zooomrlearnmore's Wiki Zooomr is a next generation universal photo sharing site.  Originally, the site started in late 2005 by Kristopher Tate as a place for him to share photos with his friends in Japan.  Since most other photo sites were only in English, Kristopher decided to build a site that could be viewed in both English and Japanese.  The site was relaunched in April of 2006 after a favorable write up from TechCrunch's Mike Arrington.  Since then, Zooomr has continued to evolve and is now localized in 18 different localizations. Codev2 by Lawrence LessigFrom the Preface: "This is a translation of an old book—indeed, in Internet time, it is a translation of an ancient text." The aim of Code v2 is to update the earlier work, making its argument more relevant to the current internet.Code v2 was written in part through a collaborative Wiki. That version is still accessible here. Lessig took the Wiki text as of 12/31/05, and then added his own edits. Banning Pencils

I found this on Doug Johnson's "The Blue Skunk" blog. - worthwhile reading - see the entire article for more.

I gotta say that this “potential misuse” as a reason for banning technologies drives me nuts. If we applied this rationale for not allowing a technology to an old, familiar technology, we’d certainly have to ban pencils from school because:

  1. A student might poke out the eye of another student.
  2. A student might write a dirty word with one. Or even write a whole harassing note and pass it to another student.
  3. One student might have a mechanical pencil making those with wooden ones feel bad.
  4. The pencil might get stolen or lost.
  5. Kids might be doodling instead of working on their assignments.

Using Digital Cameras

Introduction to Digital Photography * Digital Communications

Does your classroom have digital cameras, computers, printers, and access to the Internet? Then you're set to have your students "go digital" - shoot, edit, organize, and share digital photos - as they create information about the subject matter they study. From digital storytelling to powerful presentations, students learn better when they create as they learn, which is an aspect of 21st century learning. What are the steps you need to know? Follow this tried and true organization, and you'll have it all under control.

So you have a podcast, and you are pretty sure you have an audience of some sort, because your download statistics have real numbers. But numbers don't tell you anything about the people listening or viewing your show. Those statistics don't tell you that Aunt Fannie in Missouri loves it when you talk about your cat, or Pierre in Paris wishes you'd mention your Ducati bike more often. Did you even know that Aunt Fannie and Pierre had names and faces? Do you know who is listening to your show?

So what is The Levelator? It's software that runs on Windows or OS X (universal binary) that adjusts the audio levels within your podcast or other audio file for variations from one speaker to the next, for example. It's not a compressor, normalizer or limiter although it contains all three. It's much more than those tools, and it's much simpler to use. The UI is dirt-simple: Drag-and-drop any WAV or AIFF file onto The Leveler's application window, and a few moments later you'll find a new version which just sounds better.

Professional Development

David Jakes has some interesting ideas in this article.  Many of them are what we are doing in one of the classes I am teaching to Educators.   I wonder what other items should be integragted.

Professional Development and Web 2.0
David Jakes
from Technology & Learning

Professional development in most schools has a predictable look and feel: summer workshops, brown-bag luncheon trainings, and the infamous in-service day. These events can be successful, and there is no doubt they have helped numerous educators become better at what they do. But Web 2.0 opens up a new world of professional learning.
